Hilltops Council was established on May 12, 2016 and includes the former council areas of Boorowa, Harden and Young in New South Wales. Hilltops Council has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Statutory Planner to join their team of highly-skilled town planners dedicated to supporting their local community and encouraging development of the Local Government Area.

Based at the Young Office, with some travel between the Boorowa and Harden offices, you will be responsible for providing development assessment and development control services to Council and the community.

Specific daily duties will include:

  • Assessing development applications and assisting with pre-DA enquiries;
  • Providing expert advice to a variety of stakeholders in relation to planning enquiries and the application process;
  • Contributing to the development of planning policies and procedures;
  • Providing regular updates on the progress of applications and preparing written planning reports for presentation to Council;
  • Attending and documenting the outcomes of meetings, workshops and forums on behalf of Council; and
  • Liaising with various government departments on land use matters.

About You

You will be tertiary qualified in urban and regional planning or equivalent, with a strong and demonstrated understanding of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 in relation to development assessment and development control within the legislative framework.

Working as part of a vibrant multi-disciplinary team, you will need excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to negotiate and consult with a range of stakeholders. Although you will need to be adept at working autonomously, with minimal supervision, you will also be proactive about seeking feedback and ask others for help when required.

Excellent time-management skills will be essential, with the ability to adjust to varying workloads and meet the deadlines of competing priorities.

You must also be confident and flexible as you engage with diverse audiences, adjusting your style and approach to effectively explain legislative and policy requirements, and communicate other complex issues in a clear and simple manner. 

Council is looking for someone who is motivated and self-driven, with a strong level of commitment to customer service and community focused outcomes. Most importantly, you will act with integrity, representing the organisation in an honest, ethical and professional manner at all times.

Previous Local Government experience will be highly regarded, as will an advanced level of computer literacy.

Please note: To be eligible for this role you must hold a current and unrestricted Driver’s License.
